Music Audition Registration

Thanks for your interest in Oglethorpe University's Music program.

Music scholarships ranging from $500-$1000 are available. These are merit-based scholarships available to all Oglethorpe students. Priority is given to those students committed to pursuing a music minor, or otherwise highly dedicated to the university's music program. Generally, awarded funds are intended to offset the cost of individual vocal or instrumental study with one of our acclaimed instructors. Funds may also be used to support music-academic pursuits and other university related activities identified by the recipient.

    • Instrumentalists: If you are new to the music program, we encourage you to set up an informal screening with Dr. Gutierrez, ngutierrez@oglethorpe.edu, who conducts our Oglethorpe University Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. We invite all instrumentalists to audition to be included in our Chamber Music opportunities. You are encouraged to bring your own instrument; Oglethorpe will provide an audition instrument for any student who needs one.
    • Singers: If you are new to the music program, you are welcome to enroll in MUS-134, University Singers without any audition or pre-screening. We encourage all singers to schedule an audition with Dr. Schmidtaschmidt@oglethorpe.edu, to be considered for placement in the Oglethorpe Chorale.

Please complete the Audition Request Form below. Please note that if you have already requested an audition through your Scholarship Weekend RSVP you do not need to complete the form below. If you have questions, you may contact either faculty member listed above.

    To prepare for your audition:

    • Instrumental Scholarships: Prepare two selections in contrasting styles (i.e. Classical, Baroque, Romantic, 20th century, etc., OR by genre: pop, Jazz, Broadway, original composition, etc.). Prepare 3 scales and arpeggios in your chosen keys. Sight-read a short selection chosen by the audition panel.
    • Vocal Scholarships: Prepare two selections in contrasting styles (i.e. Classical, Jazz, pop, Broadway, etc.) If preparing two Classical pieces, they may be in different languages or from different musical time-periods. Simple vocal technique and range assessment. Sight-read a short selection chosen by the audition panel.

*All individuals should bring two extra copies of your sheet music. An accompanist will be provided, though you are also welcome to bring your own. No piece needs to exceed 3-5 minutes in length.
